Crafting a Compelling Vision
Before you can lead anyone anywhere, you have to answer one question: Where To? Your team cannot follow you to a destination they cannot see, and your customers cannot feel the change you promise until you can describe it. When you answer Where To? with a clear, compelling vision, alignment starts becoming momentum. The exercise below starts with a thank-you note from your ideal customer, because that note is your proof that you arrived at your destination of success. Get clear on where you are going, and every decision after that gets easier.
What makes a great vision statement?
A great vision statement paints a better future for your customers. It is easy to remember and repeat, inspires people to act, and reaches beyond what is possible today.
- Future Focused
- Customer Centric
- Memorable
- Inspirational
- Repeatable
- Aspirational
Step 1
A thank-you note from your ideal customer
Write a thank you note that you would love to receive, one that shows you succeeded and reached your destination. You created enough value for someone else (your ideal customer, who can be internal) that they were so happy about it, they invested their own time to send you a note about all the things you did for them and how you changed their world and their lives. What is better in their world because of your product or service? How did you solve their "migraine" problems? If you can get agreement from your team on this story about somebody who receives value from what you created, that is a fantastic place to start.
